ALASKA TRIP DAY 29, 30 and 31

Kenworth Dealership, Lewiston, Idaho

It is Sunday, July 8th and this is where we have been sitting since Friday night at about 6:30 pm. We left Kennewick, Washington, (where I picked up the Steve McQueen Triumph) drove about 80 miles East on Highway 12 when La Jefa decided it was time once again to retire service to the trip.

This marks the 8th time she has let us down. We thought it was another coolant problem because it acted the same way it did when it quit running before. Once we looked at the coolant overflow tank and found it to be full, our heart sank realizing that we had a new issue.

La Jefa would re-start but would not stay running. We checked the fuel filter attached to the back of the engine compartment and it seemed fine (had fuel coming through). I had to ride the Triumph 10 miles back to the last town, call the towing service, then ride back. It took three hours for them to arrive and thankfully they brought the correct size tow truck. In Canada, we waited four hours for a tow, when they got there the truck was not big enough to haul us!

Every once in a while you meet exceptional people and I can tell you, our tow truck operator, Walt, is one of those individuals. Walt prides himself on having a perfect driving record with no citations or incidents with regard to his job of towing big rigs to help. Not only did he get us to the dealership safely, but he also went an hour out of his way to bring us another section of power cord so we would have electricity during our wait for the dealership to open on Monday. He also came back Sunday after reading this blog to offer his network card so I could get on-line! Walt, we love you!!!

Through all of this, I give great credit to the spirit of my aging parents, who have managed to find a way to laugh at our stranded situation. In the last two days of living in a hot, dusty parking lot with minimal shade, in over 100-degree heat, we have found a way to stay positive and eat well. We even made an apple pie from scratch using La Jefa’s microwave/convection oven, and MAN was it good! Funny how great things can taste based on your situation. We’d probably spit it out if we had made it in the luxury of our own home?

Here is the last picture you will get of “Killer” the Kawasaki KLR-650. It was a fantastic bike and I can tell you, it was hard to see it go. As you may well have guessed, this picture was taken at the dealership (Thunder Alley Victory Triumph) where I picked up the new Steve McQueen Triumph. All the crew members present, even Benz who is hard to see next to my jacket.

I did keep the windscreen of the KLR because of the memorabilia attached. I plan on framing that along with other significant collectibles as a reminder of our travels, of course, we’re not back yet! La Jefa, take us home soon, will you please?

ALASKA TRIP DAY 28

Do Not Disturb!

We had a great day of travel. We woke up to sunny skys for the first time in over a week and I was looking forward to riding without my insulated base layer on.

Our destination for the day was “Anywhere USA” We arrived at the border around 3:00 or so, Mert went in to duty-free, then we set the cruise on 65, headed South on highway 97 to 17 with Moses lake in our sights. Three hours later we arrived at the Sunset RV Park and quickly set up for a relaxing evening. What’s on the menu for the 4th? Steak, potato, corn, garlic bread and a cold beer!

We were told that we could see the fireworks from a hill on the property but I know for a fact that I will be 10 toes up before that happens.

Tomorrow we head to Kennewick to pick up the Triumph. I’ll send some pics of the new ride in the next post.

Happy 4th everyone!

ALASKA TRIP DAY 25, 26, 27

“Bullwinkle”

Hey, it’s been a while since we last spoke and we have made good progress navigating our path back to the states. In my last post, I mentioned, we were trying to get to Watson Lake in the Yukon to settle in for our first night back in Canada.

We did make it to Watson Lake but not without some more drama provided by our female boss “La Jefa” the rolling money pit! She decided she was going to piss out all of her radiator fluid again. Turns out we had a pinhead size hole in the radiator and the coolant was leaking out about as fast as we could replace it. Thank god we were staying in a town versus the wilderness, we were able to find an auto parts store close. We bought some stop leak to put in the coolant system and it did the trick. La Jefa just wants to go back to Michigan and sit idle in her nice comfortable stall where she belongs and I am going to make sure she does, then, I NEVER WANT TO SEE HER AGAIN!

On our route through the Yukon (on highway 97) we encountered Bullwinkle eating the fresh grass off the bottom of a small pond (above). This was not a full-grown bull but he was still a mature male. I had to zoom in quite a bit to get this shot. We were up high on a bank looking down a hundred yards or so.

Canada Day “eh”

Canada day fell on Sunday but the locals celebrated the holiday on Monday. Most businesses’ were closed with the exception of most convenience stores.

Benz shows his support by chewing up this flag we got when we checked into our campground on Monday evening. He also got to chase a Jack Russell Terrier around the yard for about an hour or so before that dog wore him out. He’s gotten soft on this trip like the rest of us. This brings me to our daily routine.

Each morning Mert wakes up between 5-6 am to make herself a cup of joe with the KEURIG coffee maker she loves. OB rolls out of bed next around 7 am and Mom immediately springs to her feet to make his standard breakfast of bacon and eggs over easy with toast and coffee. I wake up when Mom does but refuse to get out of bed until both of them have eaten and are out-of-the-way. Once that happens, I get up, fold up my blanket, push in the pull-out couch, (this doesn’t faze Benz, who is still sleeping where my feet were) eat my Cheerios and yogurt.

By the time I’m done eating, Benz is up doing his morning Yoga, downward dog stretch, upward dog stretch, and repeat. Now he is ready to go find a spot to whiz and the other thing. He stands up on the passenger chair and barks at me until I finally find clothes warm enough to take him outside. By now my father has been outside and unplugged all of the utilities and is back inside running the slide-a-bay in (even though Mert is still standing in the kitchen doing dishes!) I have learned to linger in bed longer so my Mom has a little more time to get dressed, if I didn’t, I swear he would be driving down the road while she was still trying to clean the kitchen or putting her make-up on…

After we finally get rolling in the morning, we usually try to put a couple hundred miles on the odometer before stopping for lunch. We try to stop somewhere with a view, maybe a roadside pull-off overlooking a lake or river. Lunch usually consists of a sandwich with chips and a pickle spear. Mert and OB find a way to sneak a doughnut in there somewhere. This is also a pit stop for Benz, you can set your watch to his habits, or maybe we’re setting them for him? Nonetheless, he is the most consistent one of us all.

We have been averaging about 350 to 400 miles a day and not one of them has been without rain! I think the Canadian mantra should be “Lake of the Sky”. Usually, when we have traveled at least 350 miles, I will start to look for a place to stay. Road signs for RV parks have been quite prevalent during our travels, even in the remote areas of the Yukon.

Once we get settled in the RV park for the evening, OB levels La Jefa with the automatic leveling system, hooks up water, sewer, and electric (cable TV where available). Then he extends the slide-a bay (a portion of the inside of the motorhome that slides out allowing increased space in the living room and kitchen). You can see it in the picture below.

Slide-A-Bay

I’m usually cold and wet when I’m done riding for the day so I come inside, strip off all of my gear, put on warm clothes, and sit down until Benz reminds me of his SCHEDULE. Like I said, he’s consistent!

Then, it’s Bloody Mary time and everyone partakes. They are “poor man’s bloody’s” made with beer. We split a beer three ways and I pour it in first. Next is a tablespoon of Demitri’s Bloody Mary mix, then I top it off with plain old tomato juice of any kind, mix and serve. Cheers!

After that, it’s dinner. Mert and I take turns cooking and doing dishes. Benz eats when he feels like it, I keep his dish full. He will usually eat once in the morning and again late at night, before bed. After dinner I try to blog, OB watches TV from bed or simply goes to bed. Mert will watch TV and knit at the same time, all while doing the head bob while falling in and out of consciousness. She will do this for hours unless I holler at her enough to go to bed. (Holler) isn’t that something pig farmers do?

So that’s a typical day in the life on the road, with the exception of another dialog that I’ve written about here on the blog. Tomorrow we will cross back over into the states on highway 97 just Northwest of Spokane Washington. From there we will be driving down highway 17 to Kennewick Washington where my new Steve McQueen Triumph awaits.

I am going to have a tough time trading in Killer (KLR-650). That bike will have taken me over 8000 miles, across Alberta, British Columbia, the Yukon, and Alaska, all without missing a beat. When I say I like this bike, I mean it feels like a part of me. Lord knows it’s been like an additional appendage over the last 30 days, as much as we have been joined at the hip! It does everything well and for a fraction of the cost of any other adventure bike capable of going over 200 miles before needing fuel. I dare you to find that somewhere else!

Goodbye Canada, expensive everything, not giving us enough for our money, rainy, cold, miserable Country!

Can’t wait to get home to our issues!

ALASKA TRIP DAY 24

Hi!

This morning we were all quite excited to get on the road early and pass over into Canada and more specifically the Yukon. The border crossing was even easier than last time.

(Border Patrol) Hello, where is your final destination, Mr. Chesney? (Me) Utah for me and my folks (right behind me) is headed back to Michigan. (BP) What city in Utah? (Me) Heber, near Park City. (BP) Are you carrying any firearms or weapons of any kind either on your person or in the motorhome behind you? (Me) La Jefa? (BP) La what? (me) Oh, sorry, that’s our pet name for the motorhome, it means female boss in Spanish. To answer your question, the only weapons I have are OB and Mert and they’re only a danger to themselves! (BP) Gotchya, La Jefa, she’s the boss eh? (Me) yup, and every time we question that she proves it by spitting expensive parts all over the road! (BP) Ok, here’s your passport, have a good day!

(BP) Hello, where are you headed today? (OB) Back to Utah to get rid of our son for good, then back to the comfort of our own home. (Mert) Oh Don, don’t tell her that, he’s just kidding! (BP) So, again, where exactly are you headed? (OB) Don’t listen to her, like I said, Utah, my son lives there and we have been following him on his motorcycle for a month now. (BP) Do you have any guns or alcohol in your possession? (OB) Yes, our son is ahead of us, like I said!! (BP) No, I said, do you have any firearms or alcohol onboard? (OB) Oh, no, sorry, we don’t have any of that stuff, they wouldn’t let us bring firewood into your country. We had to give it all up when we came in a couple of weeks ago. (BP) Ok Mr.Chesney you can follow your son, have a nice day!

Our goal for the day was to get a couple hundred miles into Canada before finding our next camp spot. When we came through the Yukon Territory a couple of weeks ago, we saw lots of animals and we were hoping to see more of the same.

It wasn’t long after we crossed the border that we came upon several cars stopped up ahead. They were looking at two very majestic Grizzly Bear just off the edge of the road. They were eating the fresh white flowering plants along the highway. The bear didn’t seem to mind people photographing them at all. They were within ten feet of the vehicle and never even looked up at us. They looked to be medium in size for a Grizzly but still large enough to rip you to shreds if they wanted to. It was a total downpour so I didn’t get any pics with my camera but OB got some nice video from inside La Jefe.

We drove about 300 miles today, all in the rain so I was ready to stop for the day (froze to the core). Tomorrow we hope to put another 350-400 mile day in so we can get close to Watson Lake and start our new route down the west loop (highway 37 to 97) into the states. We will be dropping into Washington State versus Montana so I can pick up my new scoot that just arrived!

ALASKA TRIP DAY 20,21,22 and 23

O.B and Mert along with Mr. Ice Cream Man…

Hello again, it’s been a while since my last post and a lot has happened. Unfortunately, I will still not be able to upload the really cool video I have for you 😦 I only have an hour to get you updated before my internet subscription runs dry here in TOK RV Park.

That being said, after we moved North from Talkeetna we landed in Denali National Park, 119 miles south of Fairbanks. We reserved a spot in a campground for 2 days so we could relax a bit. My dog Benz has basically been a victim of travel circumstances so the next two days were dedicated to dog grins. I picked the Rainbow RV park for two reasons, 1) there were plenty of those tourist trap shops for Mert to get lost in and 2) tons of walkways and trails for Benz and me to get some much-needed exercise.

When we purchased our plane tickets to land on the glacier they came with two national park passes so we could enter Denali. OB and Mert didn’t want to go so I saddled up Killer and headed into the park. To my surprise, they didn’t have a ranger checkpoint? You could just waltz right in, this is strange considering the emphasis the flight company put on the fact we would need to buy the pass to land in the park. I rode about 15 miles into the park before turning around and heading back to camp. The place was crawling with tour busses and you can only pass so many of those in a 35 mph speed zone before it becomes no fun!

After the motorcycle ride, I went and got Benz and my mountain bike, we rode down the bike path to the river and found the mountain bike trail into the park. The trail was really wooded and smooth. The wildflowers were in full bloom and the smell of the forest reminded me of Northern Michigan, camping with my folks as a child. I have a really cool video of this and I hope to upload it soon.

La Jefa

After we left Denali we headed North to Fairbanks for a couple of days. We stayed at the Rivers Edge RV park just outside of town and it was the nicest campground of the trip. We rented a car for a day so we could check out the town. I could tell that my parents are starting to run out of energy for exploration because OB just wanted to visit the Great Alaskan Bowl Company and Mert just wanted to find some food items at the market. They were not interested in much else.

One thing about traveling with your elders, it sure doesn’t take much to make them happy. For my Mom it’s coffee and a doughnut, for OB, it’s a good cable channel and bacon in the morning! The other thing about traveling with old people is that neither can hear very well and my Dad can’t smell. They both fart and laugh but neither one knows what’s happening, me, I can still smell. I don’t fart because they can’t hear or smell, remember 🙂

Skinny Dick’s Half Way Inn

The picture to the right was a lucky find! A few years ago while calling on dealers for Victory Motorcycles, I found a t-shirt that said “Skinny Dicks Half Way Inn” and it had a picture of two bears, well, you know! Anyway, my wife hates that shirt, she won’t even stand next to me when I wear it. (Wife Repellant)

I bought the shirt in Anchorage and I had no idea if Skinny Dick’s was even a real business or not? While driving north to Fairbanks, it started raining really hard so I pulled off the road to change into my waterproof gloves. While standing inside LaJefa I noticed the sign on the front of the bar that said Skinny Dick’s Half Way Inn. I couldn’t believe my eyes! This is one of those places that everyone talks about but not many can find. Of course, I bought another t-shirt!

We have since moved East from Fairbanks (after a couple of relaxing days) and are headed to the Canadian border to start the trek home. I know my parents are ready to get back to their comfort zone (HOME). I am so proud of them both for traveling such a great distance with me. It takes a lot to leave the comfort of your home, your bed, your kitchen, to come out and live for two months on the road. It has been a wonderful experience for me personally and I hope my parents feel the same way. I have really missed them both over the past decade.

Guess what I’m looking forward to?

Comfort? you bet!
